have been thinking further about the 'truly or dutifully shaken' part of this debate, its 'intellectual' or 'honest' rigor. I've just been listening to some ostensibly discordant string quartet music by Peter Maxwell Davies. Am I enjoying this becuase I am enjoying this? Or am I enjoying this for different or intangible reasons?

I often disagree with the *degree* of implication that an author's view is authoritative. It's immediately suspicious that 'author' is the root of 'authoritative'! The author shouldn't really give a view that may colour his work beyond the text provided already by him to convey its own authoritativeness...UNLESS he is creating a new work in the process.

I think 'Different Skins' is somehow a good title for this subject thread. The Different Skins Syndrome of empathy within the skins of fiction protagonists that have escaped the authority of their author by now living within your skin by suspension of disbelief.
